Mountain Biking

Mountain Bike Trails Sierra Nevada Spain

Since the summer of 2014, the downhill mountain biking scene in Sierra Nevada has become very popular. Trails have been prepared across areas of the ski terrain to cater for complete novices through to the more hardy and advanced biker plus the well-established cross country routes of “Fuente Alta”.

The season opens from the end of June until early September and from around 10am until 6pm, lifts provide daily access to the slopes including one of either the “Al-Andalus” or “Borreguiles” gondolas; the “Veleta 1” chairlift; and the “Dauro” travelator belt.

There are over 30 kilometres of marked trails spanning almost 1000 metres of vertical drop and more details can be found on the trail map. Alternatively, there are plenty of biking opportunities and details close-by out of resort and year-round.

In the gentle bowl of Borreguiles, where novice skiers and boarders first take to the snow, a “Mini-Park” has been created to cater for children and novices to the downhill mountain biking scene.

Several shops, bars and restaurants re-open their doors after a break from the end of the winter ski season to offer a full range of services to enhance the visitor’s biking experience. In addition to mountain biking, there are hiking opportunities available in the immediate vicinity plus many more just a short drive away. Other activities nearby include canoeing on the Canales reservoir, climbing, canyon descents and paragliding.

Hotel accommodation is available at the popular family run Kenia Nevada with a good selection of self-catering apartments too located at the foot of the mountain with close access to the gondola.

Lift passes are required to access the pistes similar to the winter ski season starting at approximately 20€ for a one day adult pass and becoming progressively cheaper the more days that are purchased. Child prices are cheaper. Further details can be provided upon request.

Our relationship with Intersport Rio Sport during the winter months continues throughout the summer where they offer the hire of 2 different specialised bike models. They have plenty of personal experience and expert knowledge with respect to maintenance issues. They also offer guiding services plus all the protective gear you may need for your biking experience.

Other Biking Areas

In addition to the ski area, there are plenty of excellent biking opportunities in Sierra Nevada, and these may well appeal even more – especially to Enduro riders!

In the village of Monachil there is a well-respected biking business run by an English / Czech couple called RideSierraNevada. Their website has more information on their bike rental, prepared routes and cycling holidays.

In the neighbouring Genil valley, the village of Güejar Sierra is a superb mountain base for all manner of activity holidays. Explora organise routes and excursions, rent bikes as well as keeping maps and general information on the area. There is a very good hotel here (Hotel Juan Francisco) as well as a selection of village houses and apartments for rent. In April of 2015, Güejar hosted its first official Enduro race weekend.

Further south of Granada, the beautiful southern slopes of Sierra Nevada (the “Alpujarras”) also offer popular and challenging downhill biking in a stunning location. In Bubion, Alpujarra Bikes offer plenty of information as well as high quality bike hire and repair. A friendly and well established business in this area is Ciclo Montana. We can also recommend Sierra Enduro Tours.
